About Janus Institute
The Janus Institute is a Georgia-based tax-exempt 501(c)(3) corporation established for the purpose of contributing to the body of knowledge in the community and economic development and advancing its practice.
The Institute is based on the belief that economic development is an applied discipline and that much can be learned from the experience of communities and practitioners. The Institute is the administrative home of the Janus Forum, a unique program that brings together leading economic development professionals, site consultants, corporate executives, and community leaders to share ideas and experiences. A limited number of participants are invited to each Forum to facilitate in-depth peer learning. The Janus Forum is one of the most highly rated events in the field of community and economic development.
Other community and economic development programs sponsored by the Janus Institute include special topic seminars and programs, blog sites, and community outreach and assistance. The Institute is housed at Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia.
The Janus Institute and the Janus Forum were founded by Robert H. Pittman, an experienced leader in the field of community and economic development. For over 30 years, Robert has provided professional services to companies, states, communities, development agencies, and similar organizations in the U.S. and abroad.
Robert has been named a “Top Ten Consultant” and an “Outstanding Leader in Geo‐Economics” by industry publications. He has been quoted by national news media including the Wall Street Journal, and he is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars in the U.S. and abroad. His he has authored over 50 professional journal articles and two books.
Robert has held a number of executive positions in the industry including:
- Director of Global Business Location and Economic Development Consulting, Lockwood Greene (an international engineering and consulting company acquired in 2005 by CH2MHill).
- Deputy Director, International Development Research Council (now CoreNet, a leading professional association of corporate real estate executives).
Robert holds degrees in economics from Emory University and Northwestern University and an honorary degree in Business Administration from Piedmont College.
